Life from an RNA World

platelet serotonin levels. Curiously, both groups of rats differ noticeably from their wild-type counterparts only when confronted with an environmental or pharmacological challenge. The book then goes on to describe the interaction between the serotonin system and other neurotransmitters, particularly dopamine, in models of drug reward. Primates, like humans, have complex social lives yet can be reared under controlled conditions and subjected to behavioral experiments. Simian primates possess a promoter polymorphism similar to humans and also show comparable behavioral traits. Chapters 10 and 11 are a fascinating discussion of the serotonin system in human and primate social behavior. The interaction between genes and the environment emerges as a central theme in neural development with alleles conferring differential sensitivity to adverse life experiences. Importantly, variation in SERT expression could predispose individuals to psychiatric disorders and, more generally, contribute to interindividual personality differences. This volume will be of greatest interest to specialists, both basic scientists and clinicians, but the relevance of the serotonin system to various aspects of human behavior may make it a useful reference for curious outsiders. In such complex fields where a great diversity of models and experimental methods are used, a collection of expert reviews should be of great value in making sense of the complicated and sometimes conflicting results.

High Quality RNA Isolation from Leaf, Shell, Root Tissues and Callus of Hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.)
Extraction of high quality RNA is a critical step in molecular genetics studies. Hazelnut is one of the most important nuts plants in the world. The presence of the taxol and other taxanes in hazelnut plant necessitates explaining their biosynthesis pathway and identifying the candidate genes. Therefore, an easy and practical method is necessary for RNA extraction from hazelnuts. Hazelnut has h...
متن کاملA Hypothesis: Life Initiated from Two Genes, as Deduced from the RNA World Hypothesis and the Characteristics of Life-Like Systems
RNA played a central role in the emergence of the first life-like system on primitive Earth since RNA molecules contain both genetic information and catalytic activity. However, there are several drawbacks regarding the RNA world hypothesis. Here, I briefly discuss the feasibility of the RNA world hypothesis to deduce the RNA functions that are essential for forming a life-like system. At the s...
متن کاملJean-Paul Sartre on the Meaning of Life: Objections from an Islamic Viewpoint
Theories of the meaning of life are divided into two categories: nihilistic and anti-nihilistic. The latter is divided, in turn, into the view that life is meaningful and the view that life can be made meaningful. In this paper, we deploy a descriptive-analytic method to discuss Jean-Paul Sartre’s view of nihilism. In his view, God does not exist, the human being is born and dies without a reas...
متن کاملThe origins of the RNA world.
The general notion of an "RNA World" is that, in the early development of life on the Earth, genetic continuity was assured by the replication of RNA and genetically encoded proteins were not involved as catalysts. There is now strong evidence indicating that an RNA World did indeed exist before DNA- and protein-based life. However, arguments regarding whether life on Earth began with RNA are m...
متن کاملRibozymes: Building the RNA world
For nearly thirty years, nucleic acid biochemists have dreamed of a very special RNA molecule, still hypothetical, which is thought to have played a key role in the early history of life on earth and may enable the production of life in the laboratory. That molecule is an RNA enzyme, or ribozyme, with the ability to catalyze the replication of RNA molecules, including copies of itself. All know...
متن کاملSmall Cofactors May Assist Protein Emergence from RNA World: Clues from RNA-Protein Complexes
It is now widely accepted that at an early stage in the evolution of life an RNA world arose, in which RNAs both served as the genetic material and catalyzed diverse biochemical reactions. Then, proteins have gradually replaced RNAs because of their superior catalytic properties in catalysis over time. Therefore, it is important to investigate how primitive functional proteins emerged from RNA ...
